Sam Ellis - Chair of UKYP Board of Trustees

Sam, from Retford in Nottinghamshire, was first elected to the Board of Trustees in a by-election in January 2005 to represent the East Midland’s region, being re-elected twice again in 2005 and 2007.  Sam previously represented Nottinghamshire on UKYP (2003-2004). In 2003 Sam won the Lions Young Ambassador Award in recognition of his work locally.  In September 2006 Sam took the lead for Human Resources and Chair the HR Sub-Group until 2009. From January 2008 to January 2009, he held the position Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. In January 2009 Sam was elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Sam holds a BA(Hons) Degree in Modern World History which he gained from the University of Central Lancashire.

Joe Bell - Vice Chair of UKYP Board of Trustees

Joe, from Romford, was elected as trustee for the London region in January 2007. Before taking a seat on the Board, he represented the London Borough of Havering both as a DMYP and an MYP, before representing the London region on the Procedures Group. Among his achievements during his time in the UK Youth Parliament, Joe has worked with the London 2012 team to ensure that their views were included in the bid for the Games, and has worked with Metropolitan Police to ensure that policing in London observes the needs and rights of young people across the city. He has also represented London and the UK at an international conference in Berlin, which was convened to share best practice and to discuss the ways in which the young people of Europe can unite to promote the youth voice on the international stage. In 2008 he was named as one of Havering’s Young Citizens of the Year. Joe is currently in his first year of study in History and Politics at the University of Warwick.

Board Members

Ann Brown - Ann is the General Manager, the organisation's lead member of staff. Ann has over 15 years of diverse management experience, covering service development, project management and fundraising. Ann joined the Scottish Youth Parliament in May 2008 from RNID, where she was Service Development & Project Manager. It is the General Manager's job to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Scottish Youth Parliament, to manage all SYP staff and to ensure organisational stability and strong strategic direction. The General Manager is also SYP Ltd Company Secretary.

Victoria Caswell - representing young people in the East of England - Victoria has been volunteering for 5 years but was elected as an MYP in February of 2008 where she worked in her local area for young people and was one of the first Campaign Rep for UK youth Parliament in 2009. Victoria has spoken at the National Adults and Childrens Service conference and seminars on Youth Participation. Victoria has done a lot of Local work as well including setting up a Youth Council in her hometown and has been awarded the Norwich Civic Award for Voluntary service and was shortlisted for UK Youth Parliament Community Engagement Award. You can always find her on Twitter :)

Keir Hirst - Keir is a partner at Wace Morgan Solicitors and specialises in employment law. Prior to converting to the law, Keir studied politics at Liverpool University and has a life-long interest in parliamentary democracy. His other interests are being with his young family, cricket and, when time allows, the occasional pint of beer.

Jaffer Hussain - representing young people in the North West - Jaffer has been part of UK Youth Parliament since 2005 where he became  Deputy MYP for Blackburn with Darwen and then went on to retain that title at the next election. In 2006, Jaffer, along with colleagues from Blackburn and the  amazing Northwest started a project that would be later known as Project Safe Space – a series of 9 regional conferences which allowed young people to discuss issues around terrorism, extremism and youth leadership. Jaffer was then chosen to be one of 15 Young UK Ambassadors representing young people (through UKYP) internationally. Jaffer is also a part time youth worker in Blackburn and is studying English Language and Politics. His ambition is to one day become Chief Exec of this amazing organisation, so Andy watch out!

Matthew Jackson - representing young people in Yorkshire and Humber

Billy Jones - representing young people in the South East - Billy is currently chair of the Human Resources sub group for the Board of Trustess. He represtented the youth of the UK at a UN road safety conference in Geneva in 2007. Billy also works full time as the Vice President Academic and Welfare of Edgehill University.

Sally Keverne - Sally represents English Local Authorities’ involvement in UK Youth Parliament, and is joint Board lead (with Nicky Peck) on policies and practices concerning Safeguarding Children & Young People.

Hilary Lynn - representing young people in Scotland

Sara McCartan – representing young people in Northern Ireland

James Moody – James has been involved in UKYP since its earliest days. In 1998 after representing the UK at the first ever G8 Young People’s Summit, he decided to carry his experiences of this into supporting the development of a UK Youth Parliament.  He chaired the Steering Group which oversaw the beginnings of UKYP, and was a founder and first Co-Chair of the UKYP's charitable trust. James is now the lead trustee for Finance and currently Chairs the Finance, Audit and Property Sub Group. Away from UKYP, James, after graduating in Politics and Law, held a number of positions working in the youth participation field. In 2006 he joined North Wiltshire District Council in 2006 as their Partnership Development Officer leading on the Councils relationship with the Voluntary & Community Sector.

Drew Neill - Non-Corporate Trustee Northern Ireland - Drew is Participation Coordinator part of the management team at the Northern Ireland Youth Forum. He has been with the NIYF for over 7 years in a number of roles, and has a long history of youth participation, democracy and social justice work- growing up through the Youth Service in Northern Ireland.  Drew’s role at NIYF is to manage and support all participation programmes, and the staff in these roles, including the UKYP work in NI. Drew also leads on Child Protection and Safeguarding at NIYF.  He has been involved with UKYP in the RC role, and as Trustee on a few tenures, since 2002. Drew holds a Degree in Community Youth Work, is completing an MSC thesis, and commences Social Work training at Queens University, Belfast in October 2010.

Nicky Peck - Nicky has over 26 years working with young people in the field of information, advice and guidance in educational and community settings. She has worked in urban and rural locations as well as in private Careers and Connexions Partnerships and more recently in a Local Authority. She has experience of working at a strategic and operational level with particular strengths in managing organisational change and development, devising and embedding service-wide performance management frameworks and evaluating projects with a wide range of partners.Until July 2008 Nicky was joint Head of Service for an integrated Youth Support Service. She has up-to-date experience of leading and managing the merger of a Connexions and Youth Development Service and of successfully leading the service through a recent OFSTED and Enhanced Youth inspection.

Jayesh Rajyaguru - representing young people in the South West - Jayesh is training to become a tax specialist since graduating with BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Management and Finance in 2009, and has been an active volunteer for over 8 years to various organisations. He has held positions such as President of KCL India Society, Leader of Bristol Youth Shadow Cabinet and a young Bristol representative for Connexions. In addition to UKYP, Jayesh is also a committee member of a local London charity, providing events for all ages and strengthening community bonds. He is a keen cricketer and also enjoys mixing music and turntablism. Jayesh has been with UKYP for over 5 years, having been elected to represent Bristol during its first election in 2005. After standing down in 2006, he was elected by the South West to represent the Youth Sector on the South West Regional Assembly (now SWRDA) until he became a trustee in 2007. Jayesh was awarded the Millennium Volunteers Award of Excellence for his work as an MYP in 2005.

Richy Rana - representing young people in the West Midlands - Richy was previously an MYP for Birmingham for three consecutive years. She is currently studying A-Levels and will go onto University in 2010 to study Philosophy and Classical Civilisation. She represented the UK in 2008 in Venice for the European Youth Parliament. She helped compile an influential report on improving Sex and Relationships education in Birmingham which is currently taking action in schools, youth groups and drop-in centres.

Ashley Sweetland - Ashley works for Corporate Culture, a leading communications, corporate responsibility and social marketing agency where he leads the company’s focus area on children and young people.  He manages a wide range of projects for public, private and third sector clients.  Ashley’s support for UKYP activities focuses on strategy, communications and corporate development whilst also being the Chair of the Standing Committee on Safeguarding Children and Young People. He has previously worked for The National Youth Agency and Department for Education and Skills and was a member of the Commission on youth action and volunteering headed by Ian Russell CBE and subsequently played a key role in the setup of the youth volunteering charity, v. Ashley was Bournemouth’s first MYP from 2000-2002, a member of the UKYP Procedures Group since it began until he stepped down as an MYP in 2002.  He has been a trustee since September 2003, the South West Board representative for the following two years and was Co-Chair from January 2004 – November 2005. Ashley has a degree in Politics with Law and is a qualified part time youth worker. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Jo Swinson MP - Jo was elected MP for East Dunbartonshire in May 2005. She has previously held portfolios on foreign affairs, equality, Scotland and the arts. Jo was a member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee from 2005-2010 and was also the chairperson of the Liberal Democrats Women's Policy Working Group. An active member of the Liberal Democrats since 1997, Jo was Secretary and then Vice Chair of the Liberal Democrat Youth & Students. A champion of positive action rather than positive discrimination, Jo chaired the Lib Dem Campaign for Gender Balance from 2006 - 2008. Jo was a member of the Speaker's Conference from 2009-2010 which looks at ways to increase the number of women and BME MPs.
